2(5H)-Furanone: a prospective strategy for biofouling-control in membrane biofilm bacteria by quorum sensing inhibition BJM
Ponnusamy,Kannan; Paul,Diby; Kim,Young Sam; Kweon,Ji Hyang.
Biofouling of membranes demands costly periodic cleaning and membrane replacement. A sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for maintenance is not available and would be of great interest for many purposes including economical. As complex biofilm formation by environmental strains is the major cause of biofouling and biofilm formation in most cases are controlled by N-Acylhomoserine lactone (AHL)mediated Quorum Sensing (QS). An effort was made to understand the appropriateness of 2(5H)-furanone, to use against biofouling of membranes. QS inhibition activity by 2(5H)-furanone was studied using bioindicator strains and known AHLs of different acyl chain lengths. The biofilm inhibition was studied by growth analysis on polystyrene plate of...

Adaptation of copper community tolerance levels after biofilm transplantation in an urban river ArchiMer
Fechner, Lise C.; Versace, Francois; Gourlay-france, Catherine; Tusseau-vuillemin, Marie-helene.
The Water Framework Directive requires the development of biological tools which can act as early-warning indicators of a sudden increase (accidental pollution) or decrease (recovery due to prevention) of the chemical status of aquatic systems. River biofilms, which respond quickly to modifications of environmental parameters and also play a key part in the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, are therefore good candidates to monitor an increase or a decrease of water pollution. In the present study, we investigated the biological response of biofilms transplanted either upstream (recovery) or downstream (deterioration of exposure levels) the urban area of Paris (France). Both modifications of Cu community tolerance levels and of global bacterial and...

Alterocin, an antibiofilm protein secreted by Pseudoalteromonas sp. 3J6 ArchiMer
Jouault, Albane; Gobet, Angelique; Simon, Marjolaine; Portier, Emilie; Perennou, Morgan; Corre, Erwan; Gaillard, Fanny; Vallenet, David; Michel, Gurvan; Fleury, Yannick; Bazire, Alexis; Dufour, Alain.
The aim was to identify and study the antibiofilm protein secreted by the marine bacterium Pseudoalteromonas sp. 3J6. The latter is active against marine and terrestrial bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical strains forming different biofilm types. Several amino acid sequences were obtained from the partially purified antibiofilm protein, named alterocin. The Pseudoalteromonas sp. 3J6 genome was sequenced and a candidate alt gene was identified by comparing the genome-encoded proteins to the sequences from purified alterocin. Expressing the alt gene in another non-active Pseudoalteromonas sp. strain, 3J3, demonstrated that it is responsible for the antibiofilm activity. Alterocin is a 139-residue protein including a predicted 20-residue...

Bacterial biofilms with emphasis on coagulase-negative staphylococci J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Oliveira,A; Cunha,MLRS.
In addition to their capacity to attach to surfaces, various groups of microorganisms also produce an extracellular polymeric substance known as "slime". This slime forms a thin layer around cells known as biofilm. Thus, biofilm structure comprises bacterial cells and an extracellular polymeric substance. It also presents a defined architecture, providing the microorganisms with an excellent protective environment and favoring the exchange of genetic material between cells as well as intercellular communication. The ability to produce biofilm is observed in a large group of bacteria, including coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) which are the predominant microorganisms of normal skin flora and have been implicated as the causative agents of hospital...

Bacterial community structure of the marine diatom Haslea ostrearia ArchiMer
Lepinay, Alexandra; Capiaux, Herve; Turpin, Vincent; Mondeguer, Florence; Lebeau, Thierry.
Haslea ostrearia produces a water-soluble, blue-green pigment, called marennine, with proven economic benefits (as a bioactive compound used to green oysters, which improves their market value). Incomplete knowledge of the ecological features of this marine diatom complicates its cultivation. More specifically, the ecology of bacteria surrounding H. ostrearia in ponds is what remains unknown. The structure of this bacterial community was previously analyzed by means of PCR-TTGE before and after isolating H. ostrearia cells recovered from 4 localities in order to distinguish the relative parts of the biotope and biocenose and to describe the temporal dynamics of the bacterial community structure at two time scales (2 weeks vs. 9 months). The bacterial...

Bacterial exopolysaccharide and biofilm formation stimulate chickpea growth and soil aggregation under salt stress BJM
Qurashi,Aisha Waheed; Sabri,Anjum Nasim.
To compensate for stress imposed by salinity, biofilm formation and exopolysaccharide production are significant strategies of salt tolerant bacteria to assist metabolism. We hypothesized that two previously isolated salt-tolerant strains Halomonas variabilis (HT1) and Planococcus rifietoensis (RT4) have an ability to improve plant growth, These strains can form biofilm and accumulate exopolysacharides at increasing salt stress. These results showed that bacteria might be involved in developing microbial communities under salt stress and helpful in colonizing of bacterial strains to plant roots and soil particles. Eventually, it can add to the plant growth and soil structure. We investigated the comparative effect of exopolysacharide and biofilm formation...

SOUZA VIANA,ELISETH; MARTINO CAMPOS,MARIA EMILENE; REIS PONCE,ADRIANA; CUQUETTO MANTOVANI,HILÁRIO; DANTAS VANETTI,MARIA CRISTINA.
The objective of this study was to detect the presence of acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs), signal molecules of the quorum sensing system in biofilm formed by Hafnia alvei strains. It also evaluated the effect of synthetic quorum sensing inhibitors in biofilm formation. AHLs were assayed using well diffusion techniques, thin layer chromatography (TLC) and detection directly in biofilm with biomonitors. The extracts obtained from planktonic and sessile cell of H. alvei induced at least two of three monitor strains evaluated. The presence of AHLs with up to six carbon atoms was confirmed by TLC. Biofilm formation by H. alvei was inhibited by furanone, as demonstrated by 96-well assay of crystal violet in microtitre plates and by scanning electron microscopy....

Marques,Viviane Figueira; Motta,Cássia Couto da; Soares,Bianca da Silva; Melo,Dayanne Araújo de; Coelho,Shana de Mattos de Oliveira; Coelho,Irene da Silva; Barbosa,Helene Santos; Souza,Miliane Moreira Soares de.
Abstract Staphylococcus spp. play an important role in the etiology of bovine mastitis. Staphylococcus aureus is considered the most relevant species due to the production of virulence factors such as slime, which is required for biofilm formation. This study aimed to evaluate biofilm production and its possible relation to beta-lactamic resistance in 20 S. aureus isolates from bovine mastitic milk. The isolates were characterized by pheno-genotypic and MALDI TOF-MS assays and tested for genes such as icaA, icaD, bap, agr RNAIII, agr I, agr II, agr III, and agr IV, which are related to slime production and its regulation. Biofilm production in microplates was evaluated considering the intervals determined along the bacterial growth curve. In addition, to...
